Mentha arvensis is the primary species of mint used to make natural menthol crystals and natural menthol flakes. This species is primarily grown in the Uttar Pradesh region in India. Menthol as an organic compound also manufactured synthetically or obtained from peppermint or other mint oils.The crystals are waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature with a very low melting point. The main form of menthol occurring in nature is negative menthol. Menthol's ability to chemically trigger the cold sensitive trpm8 receptors in the skin is responsible for the well known cooling sensation that it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin. Menthol does not cause an actual drop in temperature.Menthol has local anesthetic, cooling and counter irritant qualities. Peppermint has a high menthol content, and is often used as a favouring in tea, ice cream, confectionery, chewing gum, and toothpaste. The oil also contains menthol and methyl esters. It is the oldest and most popular flavor of mint-flavored confectionery.
